Huerto de Osos Perezosos—translated roughly to “vegetable patch of the sloths”—is an international writer and artist retreat center surrounded by a budding vegetable and fruit garden in Xalapa, the capital of the Mexican state of Veracruz on the east coast of Mexico. Our main intention is to bring creative practice together with the creative flow of nature, to allow one to dip one’s hands into the soil as one dips one’s hands into paint or ink and to bring forth energetic eruptions, momentary forms that breathe fire and rain and give voice to moments of formation. 

Put simply, it is a quiet home away from home without the normal distractions. We have created a space for growth, disruption, and change through the interwoven webs of personal and societal movements. It is a container for releasing ego and welcoming in abundance and renewal.

It is uniquely paired with a large cultural center/café (Bundo) in the heart of downtown Xalapa where writers/artists/musicians/dancers are encouraged to host workshops, classes, readings, and exhibitions in a welcomed exchange of cultures and ideas. Bundo is a café, bookstore, gallery, and pizzeria. In the spirit of fellow nomads, we welcome all travelers local and international and provide space and comfort for the impactful exchange of energies and ideas.
